Toronto Star about to go all Slumdog Millionaire

More bad news from the world of print journalism today as the Toronto Star announced yet another round of layoffs. According to the article found on The Globe’s website, big blue is looking at roughly 60 job cuts in its advertising and graphics departments while up to 100 unionized editing positions may be outsourced. For some context, that’s more than 25 per cent of The Star’s editorial staff.
With some U.S. papers, such as the Miami Herald, already contracting copy editing duties to companies in New Delhi, India, it’ll be intriguing to see the next step for Canada’s newspapers. Coupling this announcement with the recent body-blows to the National Post, is there any way to see this cup as half-full?
Yea, it’s scary, particularly for some of us on this blog who depend on these gigs for a living. It’s also kind of exciting though, knowing as writers and new media consumers and producers, we will continue to play an integral role in the next evolution of how people report and receive their news. We aren’t just watching the old world crumble — we’re on the cusp of an emerging vanguard. An admittedly broke vanguard, for now, but one hopes better times are on the horizon.
Heady times indeed.

I’ve been *just about* ready to comment on this for like two days, but then always back out. We could talk for hours about your last paragraph alone. And we should, one day.
