Show & Tell: The Big Pink – Sweet Dreams (Beyonce cover)

Just for fun, don’t adjust your screen
I don’t really know that much about The Big Pink except for the fact that they put out this sing-songy song called “Dominos” (awesomely remixed by Switch) and that they’re an “electro-rock” duo from London.
Said remix having sufficiently piqued my curiosity , I decided to hit play when I came across their cover of Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” on Stereogum and was more than pleasantly surprised at what I heard. It’s a great melody to begin with, but The Big Pink’s version lends the pop song a moodier, more contemplative toneāan almost unrecognizable transformation that I think is the mark of great musicianship.
Covers like these are really great intro points to artists that can blend into a really conventional music landscape (hence the airquotes around electro-rock). Some might argue it’s the easy way out of exploring a band’s own output, but I’m more likely to remember and return to an artist that does something memorable like this. Jump for linkage.

Wait. I thought this was going to be a post about The Band’s album, “music from the big pink,” which is also pretty awesome.
Also, did i mention that the big pink’s version of Beyonce is about 1,000 times better than Beyonce’s version of Beyonce?
