The Morning Dump: Canadians walk like this; John Hughes secret fiction; Jay Smooth making John Mayer sense

2010 February 13

Culturally distancing ourselves from our Southern Neighbours is kind of a national past-time here in Canada. As fun as it is to laugh at Tea Baggers Tea Partiers and milk that comes in plastic jugs, it’s always equally amusing hearing about the little idiosyncrasies that us Canadians don’t even know we possess. With Vancouver hosting the world for the Olympics, a humorous (but observational) guide by Rick Reilly proves that teaching an American to blend in with us crazy Canucks is not as intuitive as we seal clubbers might like to think.

When John Hughes passed away he left a lot of cinephiles with a sense of longing for just one other piece from their favourite cult auteur. Now their prays are answered, but this time in the form of notes, essays, and, especially, short fiction, as revealed in this Vanity Fair piece on him. Writing under the pen name inspired by a Detroit department store, JL Hudson, he wrote a very short piece called none other than “The Tit Jar.”

It’s totally understandable if you don’t want to read any more commentary on the whole John Mayer thing. That’s cool, you can watch this video from Jay Smooth instead.
