Show & Tell: Flying Lotus – Computer Face/Pure Being
Posted on 22. Feb, 2010 by Anupa in Music
If you haven’t heard of producer Flying Lotus or listened to his debut album 1983 then we can’t really be friends. I mean, I’ll smile and nod and go through the motions with you, but underneath I’ll be questioning your faith to originality and innovation in music and secretly judge you. I’ll put it out there, I’m not that into avant-garde beats for the most part, but FlyLo—who hails from Cali, a great-nephew of music legend Alice Coltrane (wife of John)—does it right, fucking up jazz, hip-hop, dubstep and bass in an unbelievably believable way. It’s textured, soulful and experimental. His third album, Cosmogramma, is coming out May 5. Thom Yorke will be singing on a track. If you’d like to continue to be friends, I suggest you preview the first track off Cosmogramma above.

And this is why we’re friends to begin with. Well, that and because we went to school together.
I’ve never heard of Flying Lotus but I have an inexplicable affinity for dubby electronica that belies my sweater vest facade. Muchos Gracias.
Ever heard of Sweet Trip? I bought that album from a used CD store in like, 1998 and it totally reminds me of this song. In fact, I am going to try and dig it up from the bowels of my cd racks now.

Yay! I’m glad you posted this.
I’ve been IN LOVEE with flying lotus ever since i heard his shit on from LA with Love.
I got a chance to check him out when he did his thing at a red bull academy session last summer, he was so incredibly down to earth and appreciative. His show at tattoo was equally bananas! If he’s ever back in town you MUST see him, its a definite no brainer.

Simon, I have not heard of Sweet Trip but I will check them out.
Also–you should check Burial. Way more dubsteppy and very British, but super awesome.
