Sady Doyle Shares Her Rivers Cuomo Intervention

Sady Doyle has posted a 5,000 word plus essay on Weezer over at the Awl that is essential reading for a) Weezer fans b) Anyone who likes reading about pop-culture c) Fans of the Awl’s sex offender week.
So basically, I think that covers everyone in the world. Brilliant writing. Here is an excerpt.
“…at some point you remember that “No One Else” exists, and you listen to the lyrics to that one for the first time in over a decade, and oh my God it is AWFUL. It is worse than ANYTHING on “Pinkerton.” I want a girl who will laugh for no one else, when I’m away she puts her makeup on the shelf, when I’m away she never leaves the house: I mean, that’s not some deep hidden misogyny you uncovered because you’re so paranoid/clever. Those are just the words. It’s like a musical installment of Twilight. If a friend were dating a dude who talked like this, you’d start leaving checklists of Signs That You Are In An Abusive Relationship all over her apartment. Which is where you would have to be, because that would be the only way you could see her, because when he was away she would never! Leave! The house!!!”

This was crazy long so it took a few days, but yeah. Awesome.”Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together. They do.” :( I saw Weezer play maybe a decade ago, around the time of the Green album, and yeah we were all chanting for “El Scorcho” too. They would play the opening chords and the crowd would go “Goddamn those half Japanese girls!” and then Cuomos would shake his head and they’d play another song instead. This happened like five times. Weezer was incredibly high school — I mean, that’s what emotions feel like when you’re that age. I listen to teenage cousins/nephews/nieces talk now and it all sounds so fucking dire, the drama, the FML, but I remember enough of how that felt to let it slide and not hold it against them. Back then, I never realized how old Cuomos was when he was saying all that shit. I never really thought about whether people grow out of it.
