Celebrate Canada Day with a rapper roundtable

Here’s a real good one from the the National Post, who roped together eight Canadian emcees from different eras and different scenes and had them shoot the shit about Drake and Canadian hip-hop in general. The partial transcript reveals a nice amount of candour (see: Maestro and Saukrates openly discussing their initial animosity, and D-Sisive sounding a bit salty — justifiably so? — over Drake doing better than good enough), and the video captures everyone spitting a verse. From Famous’ no-nonsense punchy flow to Buck 65′s loner spoken-word drawl, it highlights that Canada, when at its best, is about diversity and plurality of voices. Let’s celebrate that.
Margin notes: Gotta love watching Cadence Weapon crack the F up at D-Sisive, and Buck 65 making Maestro get all wistful. Gotta love Saukrates in general. Also, Maestro’s career as an actor must have him in mud masks because it’s like the man never ages. Contrast that with Buck 65, who, over the years, is greying up and sinking. Hopefully the Post releases a full transcript or unedited video sometime soon.
