Vote for Toronto’s best escort

“How could someone with so much education become a hooker?” my parents might say if they ever found out (which I pray they won’t). My reply is, “How could someone with so much education not become a hooker?”
Misleading headlines aside, endearingly pretentious website McSweeney’s is currently running a writing contest for aspiring online columnists.
One hopeful contestant happens to be a native daughter of our fair city, and chose as her column theme her own undeniably interesting double life.
By day, Bianca is a plain Jane technical writer at a software company. By night she’s a paid escort, advertised as providing a “girlfriend experience”.
At all times however, she’s just another twentysomething transplant from outside the GTA trying to make ends meet in the city.
As someone who has lived his entire life in Toronto, I always find it fascinating when somebody with a slightly outside perspective puts into words little observations about Toronto that slip by me without notice anymore, basically on a daily basis.
Sure, part of it is the fact Bianca is from Hamilton. But a bigger part is that she’s an excellent writer. Better than I, surely, and clearly squandered on writing software pop-ups.
She is able to describe Toronto with a voice that still seems fresh, still observing and taking notes about her humble surroundings instead of being all dead and jaded by the grind, head down playing with a smartphone or ipod on the TTC.
So go. Read Bianca’s column, love her Toronto and remember that’s the same city we’re living in too. The same life (half of it, at least). But better written.
And vote for the girl, because regardless of what job you have, working two of them deserves a slow clap.
