RIP Nate Dogg: it wasn’t a hit til he spit

Nate Dogg, G-funk devotee, the definitive hip-hop hook singer, passed away late yesterday. He was only 41 years old — “health issues” are cited as the cause of death — but had come to be a sub-icon of West Coast rap, getting his start working with Snoop Dogg in the early 90s and debuting on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic. Most who know him remember him from Warren G’s “Regulate,” possibly the smoothest, fonkiest gangster’s lament on record. But Nate moved on from strictly G-Funk styled records to featuring on some of the biggest hip-hop hits of the 2000s. I mean, he was so ubiquitous at one point it’s hard to believe there’s a segment of “young people” that remains oblivious to who he is and why he’s #trending. While there’ll be a million posts out there celebrating lost Nate Dogg gems, my commemoration involves Nate Dogg’s most masterful commercial radio hits; an audio-visual nostalgic examination into why, despite a penchant for being crass as fuck (whoops!), Nate’s not just a glorified hook singer but deserving of canonization.
